Hudson was born in the Michigan town of Benton Harbor. His father was someone he had never met. When he was two months old, his mother, Maggie (Donald), died of TB. Arena Donald, his maternal grandmother, raised him after that.
Hudson graduated from high school but was medically discharged after only three months due to asthma. After relocating to Detroit, Michigan, he became the resident playwright at Concept East, the country’s oldest black theatre group. He went to Wayne State University to strengthen his writing and acting abilities, and he graduated in 1973. He founded the Actors’ Ensemble Theatre, where he and other gifted young black authors directed and starred in their productions. Before leaving to act in a theatre production of The Great White Hope, he was enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He went on to Yale School of Drama to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in acting but dropped out after a year to star in Leadbelly.
Hudson’s first wife is Jeannie Moore, and she married in 1963 when she was sixteen, and he was eighteen years old. In the feature film Ghostbusters and its sequel, Hudson played Winston Zeddemore, who joins the Ghostbusters. Hudson played Bill Jenkins, the uncle of Leslie Jones’ primary character Patty Tolan, in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.
