Early Life

Gaffigan was born in Elgin, Illinois, on July 7, 1966, to Marcia Miriam (Mitchell) and Michael Ambrose Gaffigan. Gaffigan is of Irish ancestry; his surname was spelt Gavahan for numerous generations. Iowa Supreme Court Justice Richard F. Mitchell was his maternal grandfather. He grew up in Chesterton, Indiana, as the youngest of six children, and he frequently makes light of his upbringing. James’s mother, Marcia, was a charity worker and fundraiser who also dabbled in needlepoint. He earned a national award from the American Needlepoint Guild in 1985 for its unique design and craftsmanship. His mother died of cancer in 1990, at the age of 53.

His father, Michael, served as president and CEO of the Mercantile National Bank of Indiana for 15 years before retiring in 1991. He was a former seminarian who was also active in local charitable activities. In 1999, he died of lung cancer. The father of James was the first in his family to go to college, and he encouraged his children to choose careers that would provide them with job protection. On the other hand, Jim declared his desire to be an “actor” at around five years old.

Gaffigan grew up watching Saturday Night Live. He went to La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana, a football team member. James spent a year at Purdue University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, before moving to Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, where he earned a degree in finance in 1988. He was a varsity football player at both Georgetown and Purdue. Despite his dislike of finance, Gaffigan worked as a litigation consultant for a brief period after graduation and “was terrible at it.”

Gaffigan presented the graduating address at the Catholic University of America in May 2016. On May 20, 2018, the Gaffigans gave the graduating address at Jeannie’s alma mater, Marquette University.
