Key was brought into the world in Southfield, Michigan and in Detroit. As a kid, he was adopted. His dad is African-American, whereas his mom is European-American. In 1989, he moved on from Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak, Michigan. Key attended the University of Detroit as an undergrad and acquired his Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania State University School of Theater. While at The University of Detroit Mercy, he was a sibling of Phi Kappa Theta.
