Key was brought into the world in Southfield, Michigan and brought up in Detroit. As a kid, he was adopted. His dad is African-American, where his mom is European-American. In 1989 he moved on from Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak, Michigan. Key went to the University of Detroit as an undergrad and acquired his Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania State University School of Theater. While at The University of Detroit Mercy, he was a sibling of Phi Kappa Theta.
