Early Life
Bishop was born to Jane Lenore (née Wahtola) and Lawrence Boden Bishop in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was raised in Denver, Colorado, where she studied ballet at the San Jose Ballet School. Kelly moved to New York City at the age of eighteen and earned her first job dancing in a year-round ballet company at Radio City Music Hall. Bishop continued to perform in Las Vegas, summer stock, and television until she was cast in her first Broadway role, Golden Rainbow, in 1967.
Career
Bishop got her big break when she was cast as the seductive, tough-guy Sheila in the Broadway version of A Chorus Line. Her performance garnered her a Tony Award for “Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Musical)” in 1976. She has also been on Broadway in Six Degrees of Separation, Neil Simon’s Proposals, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, and Bus Stop. She was cast opposite Jill Clayburgh in Paul Mazursky’s big-screen drama An Unmarried Woman not long after (1978). Bishop was initially slated in a much lesser role in the 1987 picture Dirty Dancing but was called upon to portray Mrs Houseman after the actress allocated to the part, Lynne Lipton, became unwell during the first week of filming.
Bishop then played “mom” to two high-profile actors in films: Howard Stern in Betty Thomas’s comedy Private Parts (1997) and Tobey Maguire in Wonder Boys (2000). Ich und Er (USA: Me and Him, 1988), Queens Logic (1991), Café Society (1995), Miami Rhapsody (1995), and Blue Moon (1995) are among his other film credits (2002). Bishop appeared on television in Mike Nichols’ The Thorns, alongside Tony Roberts and Marilyn Cooper. On My Wildest Dreams, she portrayed Lisa Ann Walter’s mother. Kelly has appeared as a guest star on Kate & Allie, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Murphy Brown. Bishop featured as affluent New England matriarch Emily Gilmore, mother of Lorelai and grandmother of Rory, in The CW Television Network series Gilmore Girls from 2000 to 2007.
In 2008, Bishop appeared with Becky Shaw at the Second Stage Theatre. She later appeared in a brief revival of Anything Goes in 2011, with Sutton Foster and Joel Grey. She took over the role of Evangeline Harcourt from Jessica Walter. Bishop co-starred as Fanny Flowers on Amy Sherman-Bunheads Palladino’s on ABC Family, where she reconnected with Sutton Foster. After one season, the show was cancelled. Kelly reprised her role as Emily Gilmore in the Netflix miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016).
