He was on vacation with Jennifer Grey, whom he saw in secret while filming Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; the crash made their relationship public. Broderick told police he had no memory of the accident and had no idea why he was in the wrong lane: “What I initially remember is waking up in the hospital, with an odd feeling going on in my leg.” He was charged with causing death by hazardous driving and risked up to five years in prison, but he was found guilty of reckless driving and fined £100 (US$175).
Martin Doherty, the victims’ brother and son, termed the ruling a “travesty of justice.” He later apologized to Broderick and planned to see him in 2003.
