Paul Edward Valentine Giamatti, the youngest of three children, was born on June 6, 1967, in New Haven, Connecticut. Angelo Bartlett Giamatti, his father, was a Yale University professor who eventually became the university’s president and the commissioner of Major League Baseball. Toni Marilyn Giamatti, his mother, was a housewife and English teacher who taught at Hopkins School and had previously performed.

His paternal grandfather’s family consisted of Italian immigrants from Telese Terme; before moving to the United States, the family surname was “Giammattei.” Giamatti also has German, Dutch, English, French, Irish, and Scottish ancestors. His paternal grandmother’s ancestors were from New England and dated back to the colonial era. Marcus Giamatti, Giamatti’s brother, is also an actor, and Elena Giamatti is a jewellery designer.

Giamatti attended The Foote School before graduating from Choate Rosemary Hall in 1985. He attended Yale University, where he was involved in the undergraduate theatrical scene and collaborated with fellow performers and Yale students Ron Livingston and Edward Norton. In 1989, he received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in theatre from Yale School of Drama, where he studied under Earle REGister.
