Rafael Morais Theatre Career
In 2006, Morais made his stage debut as Hamlet in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Mirita Casimiro Theater in Lisbon. Since then, he’s performed in many plays, including Sarah Kane’s Phaedra’s Love, Brian Friel’s Lovers, Jean Genet’s Deathwatch, and Arnold Wesker’s The Kitchen.
Rafael Morais Film Career
Rafael was born in the Portuguese city of Coimbra. He came to Lisbon at the age of 15 to pursue acting. Rafael began working professionally in television and theatre while still in his first year of high school.
Rafael was then cast in Doomed Love (an official selection of the Locarno International Film Festival) at 16. Rafael was 17 years old when cast as the lead in the controversial film How to Draw a Perfect Circle.
Official submission of Portugal to the 82nd Academy Awards and received the Special Jury Prize for the best acting at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival. Rafael got a GDA (Portuguese Actors Guild) scholarship at 18 to study at the Stella Adler Acting Academy in Los Angeles.
Rafael appeared in celebrated filmmaker Joao Canijo’s Blood of My Blood (Portuguese submission for the 85th Academy Awards). Blood of My Blood was an official selection at numerous film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, AFI Fest, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Berlin Film Festival.
At the International Film Festival of San Sebastian, the film earned the FIPRESCI Prize, and at the Miami International Film Festival, it received a Special Mention.
Rafael made his debut short film, You Are The Blood, in 2012 (official selection of the IndieLisboa International Film Festival and main competition of the NewFilmMakers Film Festival).
He was nominated for Best Actor at the Portuguese Golden Globes two years in a row for his performance in How to Draw a Perfect Circle and Blood of My Blood.
Morais appeared in the famous Netflix original series White Lines in 2020. (TV series).Morais will next be featured in the film “Amadeo,” a biopic directed by Vicente Alves about Portugal’s creative hero Amadeo de Souza Cardoso; Gloria, Portugal’s first Netflix original series; Evadidos and Joao Canijo’s new feature film “Mal Vivir.”
