Background
Lim was born in Perth, Western Australia, to Chinese-Malaysian parents who immigrated to Australia in the 1970s from Malaysia. When she was five years old, her parents didn’t want to stay together, resulting in divorce. Lim’s single father reared her, and her mother relocated to Malaysia and remarried a Peranakan Manitoba. Lim would frequently visit her mother in Malaysia, where she had family other than her mother.
Lim was the valedictorian of Hampton Senior High School, where she attended.
Renee: Career
Lim had initially planned to “be a doctor on weekdays, a lawyer on weekends, an actress on vacations, and a dancer at night” after graduating from high school. Lim came to Sydney, New South Wales when she was 17 years old to begin medical education at the University of New South Wales. Renee Lim graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. Lim, Keith Lim, and Jason Appleby co-directed the University of New South Wales Medical Revue, American Booty (a tribute to the 1999 film American Beauty), in 2000. Lim also co-authored two research essays throughout her university years.
Lim is a clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney’s Northern Clinical School and a physician who works largely part-time in locum roles in emergency medicine, geriatrics, and palliative care departments. Lim pondered retiring from medicine to pursue acting full-time. She realized, however, that she “loves it” and that “acting is now my work, not my hobby.” Lim’s entertainment career includes eleven guest appearances as Suzi Lau on the Australian hospital drama All Saints and a regular cast member as Jung Lim on Business School’s police drama East-West 101. Lim is now starring in Please Like Maine as Mae, Josh’s father’s younger Thai lover.

She played Suzi Lau in the long-running Australian hospital drama All Saints and Jung Lim on the multi-award-winning SBS police program East-West 101. Pulse, all three seasons of Jessica Mauboy’s The Secret Daughter for Channel 7, Lee Lin Chin’s Weekend Shift, and guest parts on Rake and Bite Club are her other credits. She also appeared in The Wolves at Belvoir, Grace Under Pressure at the Seymour Centre, Dresden, His Mother’s Voice, and Coup DeTat at the Bakehouse.
Renee was one of the first hosts of Ask the Doctor, a new ABC series that examines the condition of the nation’s health, new medical therapies, and the future of healthcare as we know it. Renee’s sensitivity and desire to assist others in ‘finding their way’ inspired her to create the educational multi-platform resource Nay In The Life, which aims to open up a conversation on identity, resilience, and mental health.
Renee: Current work
Renee has worked as a locum doctor in the NSW hospital system for many years, covering emergency medicine, palliative care, and geriatrics. She has visited practically every major hospital in the greater Sydney area. In her capacity as Director of Program Development at the Pam McLean Centre, she is responsible for developing the Pam McLean Centre’s programs. She creates communication skills, cultural transformation, and conflict resolution educational curricula for students and health professionals. Renee also works as a consultant, focusing on Engagement, Behavior Change, and The ‘Human Factor’ in various settings.
