Robert was born on March 11, 1956, and grew up in Grand Blanc, Michigan. His parents were Lee and Robert Frederick Paulsen Jr. He attended Grand Blanc High School, where he graduated in 1974. He sang in choirs throughout his infancy and adolescence and began acting in school plays, but his boyhood idol was ice hockey player Gordie Howe.
He saw the arts as a secondary career possibility owing to his primary desire to become an NHL player. Rob attended the University of Michigan-Flint for a short time before dropping out.
