Who is Thomas Grube?

Thomas Grube is a German photographer, filmmaker, and screenwriter. He has co-written, and directed documentaries on classical music with his collaborator Uwe Dierks, including Rhythm Is It. He created his first production business in 1993, with which he wrote, directed, and produced short films, documentaries, and music videos. Love is the Message, his debut feature film, was released in 1995. Studio K7 released a music film (including Sven Vath, WestBam, Kid Paul, Moby, and Cosmic Baby) that is a thorough chronicle of the early Techno generation, of which he was a member.

Grube met his boyfriend, Uwe Dierks, in 1996. Both were influenced by the personality and music of American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein and turned their attention to the classical music genre. As filmmakers and producers, they collaborated on documentaries and music films with Christoph Eschenbach, Placido Domingo, Hilary Hahn, Lang Lang, Claudio Abbado, Anne Sophie Mutter, and Li Yundi.

Grube was born in Berlin and attended the Freie Universitat Berlin, where he studied political science, American studies, Eastern European studies, and cinema and television business at the Konrad Wolf Film University in Babelsberg. Thomas worked as a director and producer at the same time.

Grube and Dierks formed the Berlin-based Boomtown Media GmbH & Co. KG in 1999 with Andrea Thilo. Since then, Grube has directed and produced several documentaries for television and film. In 2000, he was nominated for the German Film Award for Warschau Express. Rhythm Is It, a documentary with Enrique Sánchez Lensch about a community outreach initiative of the Berliner Philharmoniker with Simon Rattle, premiered at the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival and won the Bavarian Film Award and the German Film Award in 2005.

His film Trip to Asia (world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival) was released in German theatres in February 2008. At the 2008 Valladolid International Film Festival, Trip to Asia, the first feature film on the mysterious inner lives of the Berliner Philharmoniker and its chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle, won the Tiempo de Historia Award for “Best Documentary.” Rhythm Is It! is one of Germany’s most successful documentaries.

As a producer, Grube was responsible for the films Friedensschlag – Das Jahr der Entscheidung, Porgy and Me, and Porgy and Me – In the World of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Marcus Vetter’s Cinema Jenin – The Story of a Dream [de] (world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) or Gerardo Milsztein’s Gerardo Milsztein’s Gerardo Milsztein’s Gerardo Milsztein’s Gerardo Milsztein’s Gerardo Milszt Friedensschlag, a documentary film shown in German theaters in 2010, won the Deutscher Kamerapreis [de] in the same year (“Best documentary film”).

The Friedenspreis des Deutschen Films was given to the project Cinema Jenin. The film was also nominated for the German Camera Prize 2012 and was distributed in German theaters by Wild Bunch in June 2012.

He followed organ virtuoso Cameron Carpenter on his journey to create his International Touring Organ in 2014. In 2014, the film The Sound of My Life was released. Grube attended the BASF group’s 150th anniversary across Europe, the United States, South America, and India with the feature film Experiment 150 from 2014 to 2016. Experiment 150 had its global debut at the 12th Festival des Deutschen Films in Ludwigshafen in 2016.

In addition to Thomas’s work as an author and director, Grube directs commercials and serves as the film producer for the production firm BOOMTOWN MEDIA. Thomas is also a member of the Deutsche Filmakademie (German Film Academy).
